New Year’s Resolution

Each time we ring in a new year, I tend to start thinking about goals for the upcoming year and progress made over the past year.  So now I’m curious.  What is your goal or resolution for 2012?  How did you do with last year’s goals and resolutions?

My goal for 2012 is to simply follow through with my crafty aspirations.  I’ve always wanted to try ____________.  (Fill in the blank here.)  For me, that blank could be filled with hundreds of things that I always INTEND to learn or try.  So, as I told one of my clients on Facebook yesterday, THIS IS OUR YEAR!  :)

Some possible ways for me to fill in the blank in 2012:

  • Upholster furniture. Or attempt it, at least.
  • Try some fun new recipes.
  • Learn to knit or crochet.
  • Give homemade gifts that are both pretty AND useful.
  • Sew some adorable pillows for our guest bedroom, family room, and studio.
  • Make herb-infused oils for cooking and spice-infused sugars for sweetening my tea.
  • Become more adept at preserving food with a pressure canner and hot water bath.
  • Make luxurious, floor sweeping curtains for our new house

I always see great ideas and think to myself, “Oh, I could totally make that!”  My wish-list of projects range from food recipes to home decor to items for my new studio.  So this year… I’m going to do it.  New Year’s Day found me attempting to make homemade pasta for the first time.  Did it turn out?  Nope.  But at least I tried.  Better luck next time.  :)

So now I want to hear your big plans!  Tell me your goal or resolution and I’ll enter you in a drawing to win a Studio Noveau calendar/planner.  This awesome softcover planner has both monthly and weekly views, and features some of my favorite wedding photos of 2011.  On Wednesday, January 4th, I’ll randomly draw a number and that commenter will win the planner.  Don’t want the planner but still want to share?  Feel free to comment below!

Happy 2012!

First of all, that planner is SUPER CUTE! Love it and I know your clients will, too. :)

If you choose to learn to knit, perhaps I could teach you. It might help me complete one of MY new year’s resolutions, which is called “See Rebecca Eby in person.” :)

In all seriousness, my resolutions include running 3x per week and shooting without a tilt. :P Happy new year!

My first goal of the New Year is to get my ankle /foot better that has been keeping me laid up for the last 3 months. Physical therapy here I come!
And, almost as important as this, I hope to stay open to new enlightment in the coming year while welcoming all new opportunities and possibilties with open arms!

This year I really want to finish all the odds and ends of remodeling our house – window and wall trim, window treatments, repainting, and of course some pretty new whatsawhosits to decorate. I figure that should keep us pretty busy this year. ;)

Steph Neprud - January 2, 2012 - 5:36 pm

Oh oh oh!!! Pick me pick me :)

I MUST get organized!! :) :) :)

Jen Towner - January 2, 2012 - 6:11 pm

I have lots of business goals but my personal goal is to learn to decorate cakes like my late mother did for family members and friends! I have all the tools, now I need to get to it! <3

I know everyone says loose weight but I have hit my alltime high and I made a vow to never feel like this again. So with the help of the 17 day diet I hope to rid of this crud!!! Also I want to take my business to the next level!

Jen - January 2, 2012 - 8:59 pm

Read more. (As much as I love story time before bed, I mean the books that I want to read…) I am designating a “Family Reading Time” during the day.

Donna Justin - January 3, 2012 - 8:02 am

Don & I with leadership, skills and lots of chain saw work, brush & pile burns with Cindy and Charles begin to restore 30 acres of oak savanna on our property.

Christine - January 3, 2012 - 2:55 pm

The only year goal I have is to be a more patient person. I have monthly goals for my business – like bridal show, new business cards, update blog, and new Nikon D300 with a 50mm lens. And booking weekly clients. (hears to 2012!!!!) And I still think this is a good idea!

amanda - January 3, 2012 - 3:01 pm

My goals for 2012 include…. take more pictures. Get healthier. Improve my communication skills and be more understanding in my relationship

Kendra Brown - January 4, 2012 - 2:21 pm

I’ve had the same NY resolution for years… “eat better, be healthier”… also, to be on-time and try to get up earlier in the mornings! (I am SOOO NOT a morning person!)

amanda - January 4, 2012 - 2:39 pm

Have a blessed 2012.

As 2011 draws to a close, I have been thinking about the most meaningful photos taken over the year.

Usually I photograph weddings, and I love seeing young couples in love.  But I have to admit… seeing a couple that has been in love for decades is one of the sweetest things I can think of.  This summer, I asked my grandparents if I could take a few photos of them.  I wanted to do this not only for them, but also for the rest of the family.  Just before we grabbed these photos, I asked when the last time they had their portrait taken.  The 1970′s was their best guess.  So it was, most definitely, time for an updated photo after over 50 years of marriage.

The result?  These photos speak so deeply to me, my family, and even strangers who have seen these photos on my Facebook page.  I hope you love these photos as much as I do.  This is what I wish all my wedding clients: a lifetime of strength, growth, and love.

Have a blessed 2012 filled with love, family, and perfect memories.

Erin & Nate’s La Crosse, WI engagement session

Meet Erin & Nate.  Please don’t confuse them with Erin & Pat, because Erin & Nate were bridesmaid/groomsman in Erin & Pat’s wedding.  :)  They are getting married at the Minnesota Science Museum next year, and I can’t wait!  Since they went to school at University of Wisconsin – La Crosse, we met in La Crosse for their engagement photos.  If you’ve spent any amount of time in La Crosse, you may recognize this first location as a favorite hangout.  It’s The Bodega.

They brought some white boards for a fun “Save the Date” idea.  But we also used them for something else… I asked them to write down one thing they loved about each other.  I loved this whole series of photos.  :)

Apparently, Erin’s sense of humor is every bit as corny as mine.  A little bird told me she loves this joke:

“Where does the president keep his armies?”

Answer: “Up his sleevies”.  Hahahaha.

Earlier in the day, we stopped at The Pearl for fun candy.  Introducing: candy mustache and candy lips.

Micaela & Dustin’s Fabulous Monona Terrace Wedding

Over the past few years and 100+ weddings, I’ve been fortunate to work with some sweet clients and photograph some amazing weddings.  But I have to say, Micaela and Dustin’s wedding was one of the most beautiful, full-of-bling weddings I’ve shot.  And Micaela has to be one of the sweetest brides I’ve met.  It was a winning combination!

The day started at the hotel attached to the Monona Terrace.  Everyone was getting ready in a large suite that had beautiful light.  Note to you brides-to-be: the room you get ready in makes a HUGE difference in your photos.  Check out these great windows and light!

How fabulous is this vintage brooch bouquet?  Lovely.  I adore vintage jewelry… my bridesmaids wore antique brooches on their dress sashes, and I wore one in my hair.  Love.

This next shot was in the bathroom.  For real.  I think they wondered why I loved that hotel bathroom so much, but the light was swoon-worthy.

This was also in the bathroom.  LOVE this shot.  I just can’t rave enough about this lovely light…. I didn’t Photoshop this image at all.

Off to Olbrich Gardens for some lovely portraits:

This next one might be my favorite photo of the whole day.

Another thing that I think is important: stellar cake placement.  Why shove a cake against a boring wall?  Instead, give it a place of honor in the middle of the room or against some amazing windows.  It’s dramatic and beautiful!

Micaela surprised Dustin with a “Groom’s Cake”.  This is one tradition I love, and it’s a great way to honor your groom’s interests and hobbies.Did I mention the amazing lighting in their ballroom?  It was GORGEOUS.

Kendra & Nic’s Reception at Justin Trails, Sparta

Remember Kendra and Nic from their Punta Cana, Dominican Republic wedding in June?  (Check out the post HERE.)  Theeeeyyyyyyy’re baaaaaaack!

This time, the photos were taken a bit closer to home.  Specifically, at Justin Trails in Sparta, WI.  Nic and Kendra wanted to have a reception near home to share with the family and friends that couldn’t join them for their ceremony at Dreams Punta Cana.  Justin Trails is an amazing getaway with cabins, disc golf, and is a fantastic venue for a wedding or reception.  I love shooting here, so if you are considering this as a possible venue for your wedding, DO IT!  Then call me to photograph it.  :)

I love how many of their photos were used in decorations.  Each table featured a wedding or engagement photo, and a large 20×30 print graced the tent entrance.  Awesome.

They had a photo booth run by Eric of Carbon Copy Studios.  Suuuuper fun.  (That’s super fun, in case you need me to translate.  I’m still on my first cup of coffee so my humor doesn’t always translate well in writing.)

Kendra and Nic (and family & friends!), it was great to see you again!
