Out of office note & Kelsie’s Senior Photos!

As a traveling wedding photographer, I often get to travel to exotic locations.  In the last few years, I”ve been to the Caribbean, Mexico, Canada, Las Vegas, and the east  coast.  This weekend is a first.  This time, I’ll be journeying down to the exotic land of Arkansas for the wedding of Virginia and Tom.  :) Along the way, I’ll be stopping in Memphis to take maternity portraits.  Stay tuned for photos!  I’ll return to the office on March 19th, so email responses may be a bit slow in the next few days.

In the meantime, enjoy these photos of Kelsie, one of my 2013 Senior Models.  We photographed her senior portrait session in downtown Prairie du Chien a couple days ago… she rocked it!

I’m still looking for a few more 2013 seniors who want to earn free portraits by acting as a senior ambassador and model. School districts with openings include: Boscobel, North Crawford, Kickapoo, Viroqua, and Richland Center. I love senior picture time! Email me at rebecca@studionoveau.com for an application.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

A Greek & Italian wedding, North Carolina style. Maria & Martin.

Do you remember last year when Jen and I traveled to Baltimore for Melody and Mikey’s wedding?  Maria was the maid of honor for Melody, so when she and Martin contacted me about photographing their wedding in November, I was pretty ecstatic.  Martin is Greek.  Maria is Italian.  It is pretty much a match made in culinary heaven.  I believe her exact words to me were: “Will you photograph my big fat Greek wedding?”  Ha!  Since I’ve worked in a Greek restaurant and visited Crete, I suppose you could say I have a love affair with Greek food and culture.  But I’m getting ahead of myself.   Here’s the story, in Maria’s words:

Martin and I “met” online about five years ago. After about three or so months of emailing, we called, and met half way in Williamsburg VA. He opened the door to the hotel room (he thought I was the maintenance man cause the AC wasnt working), and we fell in love at “first” sight. I moved to Raleigh from Baltimore about three years ago, and now am getting ready to marry the man of my dreams. Martin and I run a little on the eccentric side, we love art, photography, and on any given evening you can catch us in the living room listening to our record collection and dancing. We laugh all the time with each other and AT each other! He is a percussionist (jazz, latin) and me, well, I’m just me:)I work in Insurance and he works in Food Service. We LOVE  going down town to find something new, and every time we do we wind up at our favorite music venue “The Pour House” We have our spot on the balcony, and sit and laugh and watch new bands play.
Martin asked me to marry him in our kitchen while I was cooking dinner and it couldnt have been more perfect. Well… maybe if I wasnt screaming at him “Are you serious? Are you really doing this? Are YOU SERIOUS?!?!?!?!” and just said yes… but then again it’s our story, and it’s us:)

As a side note, I asked Maria if she had a wedding theme.  Her answer?  ”I guess my wedding theme is Etsy“.  That cracked me up.  The shoes above?  Hand-painted, purchased from an Etsy seller. One of the things Jen and I noticed right away was how many big, over-the-top, joyful emotions were swirling around us.  Everyone was incredibly happy for this couple, including themselves.  It sounds funny to point that out since weddings are such wonderful days, but this wedding was notable in how extremely ecstatic they were.  Exhibit A: Maria.  This next photo was taken while she read Martin’s letter to her.

Another note.  Jen and I had photographed Patti & Sharath’s wedding in Milwaukee the day before, caught a few hours of sleep, then grabbed an early plane to Raleigh.  We were the first ones to the church and were so caught up in the day’s events that we didn’t even feel tired!  The sweetness of the couple, their family, and friends was so …. so… incredible.  These next few images of Martin  opening his gift from Maria were taken by Jen.  Greek Orthodox ceremonies are pretty awesome.  The traditions and symbolism behind them is fantastic.  The words of the ceremony may have all been Greek to us (ha ha!), but it was still a powerful, moving experience.Next two photos taken by Jen.  We couldn’t move around much so she had a hidden little perch at the front of the sanctuary.  Can you spot her behind the bridesmaids in the wider ceremony shots?

After some very large family photos and a couple of Maria and Martin, we made it to the reception hall.  Holy moly.  The food.  THE FOOD.  I thought I died and went to foodie heaven.  I have never.  ever. seen so much amazing food at one wedding.  The highlight was the baklava made by Martin’s grandma.  Each piece was topped with a single clove.  Now, I’ve had a lot of baklava in my day, and I have never tasted any that compared to this.  I’m still dreaming of this baklava.  Oh, and the shrimp & grits.  Sounds gross, yes?  Well, I gave it a shot and was pleasantly surprised at how much I loved it.  I guess there is hope for this Yankee.  (Yes, we were called Yankees several times.)

Jen and I both noticed how much everyone adored this couple.  Seriously.  Everyone was just enamored with them.  You could tell they were such sweet people.  Love it.

Two reasons I love this photo, below.

#1: Maria looks SO happy.

#2: See the flower girl?  I really want to know what she was thinking as she watched the bride and groom.

If you haven’t seen Greek dancing, you are missing out.  Jen and I both took hundred of photos of this… it was many different rings of dancers, often going in other directions, ducking under the arms of other dances.  So crazy to have this many things going on at once!  The photo above is by Jen.  Below, by me.

Next two by Jen.

Photo above is by Jen.  Now, for the next two photos, they are taken within seconds of each other.  First, everyone was gathered to watch the cake cutting.  Then, when they opened up the sweets table, it was pretty much a mad rush to the cupcakes.  I tried one, and I assure you, it was worth making your way through the crowd.  Yum.

Patti & Sharath’s multi-cultural, multi-state, multi-colored wedding

Patti & Sharath live in California and traveled back to Milwaukee, where Patti grew up, for their wedding.  This was my first time shooting at the lovely Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee.  It was GORGEOUS.  Can’t wait to go back for another wedding.  I was lucky to have Jen along as second shooter, and my friends Matt and Katie of MatKat Productions were the videographers.

Jen was able to go with the guys while they got ready; I was with the girls.  (So the shot above was taken by Jen.)

Next two shots by Jen:

This next shot was featured on Moment Junkie, a blog dedicated to real and candid wedding moments.

Next two shots were taken by Jen.

This next one makes me laugh.:)

Make sure to check out MatKat Productions video of the wedding day HERE.  It’s always fun to view the video and experience the day through a videographer’s eyes… plus, there are little peeks of Jen and me throughout the video!

Heather & Ian have excellent taste. Err… get married.

To describe it simply, I had a blast this day.  Heather & Ian, their family, friends, guests…. they were amazing.  Full of emotions; fun-loving, and so ready to celebrate the start of this new marriage.  Rather than filling up the post with words, I’m going to let the photos tell the story.  :)

Mmm, Seychelles shoes!  I saw her shoes before I met Heather for the first time, so I knew we’d get along just fine.  :)  Excellent taste, I do declare.

How great is this look for guys?  Gray suits, newsboy caps, and orange accents?  I love orange.

Alazda & Travis’s Downtown Madison Wedding

How lovely is this wedding and couple?  I just adore Alazda and Travis.  Their engagement session was so much fun and I knew their wedding was going to be awesome.  These two and Lucee, their lab, are going to do great things.  (Side note.  Lucee the Lab is on Twitter.  She’s the most tech-savvy pup I know.)

Anyway, back to Alazda and Traivs.  Their Madison, Wisconsin wedding included their traditional Catholic ceremony, stops at Olbrich Botanical gardens, an Irish Pub, and then a reception at the Monona Terrace.  Such a great day!

Next photo and the one of the groomsmen are by Jen.:)
