Katie and Eric contacted me a while back for some photos.  They were celebrating an anniversary and Katie’s birthday, and wanted some photos of them.  I call sessions like these “Connection Sessions”… photos for people in love, whether they are married, engaged, or dating.  It’s just an excuse to document that love!  We scheduled the session at Olbrich Botanical Gardens and were lucky to have a gorgeous evening!

Here are a few of my favorites:

They were so cute: anytime they walked anywhere, Katie would reach over and rub Eric’s back, or he’d give her funny little looks that would make her crack up.

This last one was just a pretty shot I grabbed before leaving Olbrich. :)

Happy 2010, Everyone!  If you’ve been a loyal blog or Facebook follower of Studio Noveau for any amount of time, you may have learned a few things about me.

  1. My husband just got back from Iraq on December 23.  (Yay for fun surprise Christmas presents!) The photo below is my hubby during his 2005 deployment.
  2. screen-capture-5

  3. I’m actually a U.S. Navy veteran myself, as I mentioned a few posts ago.  (I get seasick.  Blech.) The photo below is me and some of my Navy buddies almost 8 years ago.  Can you pick me out?
  4. screen-capture-4

  5. One of my volunteer activities is working for Operation Love Reunited as a volunteer photographer for deploying or returning military and their families. You can view a sample session by clicking here.

So… this leads me to the purpose of this post.  :)  Several of my clients have been or are currently in the military, and I pride myself on trying to be as military-friendly as possible.  So because of that, I’ve decided to make one very important change, starting in 2010.  Studio Noveau now offers a military discount!  After speaking with a new client a few days ago and learning that many photographers don’t offer military discounts, I’ve decided to make my discount public!  :)  After all, I truly believe that our military and their families are truly sacrificing themselves and years of their lives for us, the American public.

Here are the details:

  • This discount is good for 10% off any session.  Yes, this even applies to wedding packages!  And to go a step further, you may qualify for a FREE Op:Love portrait session.  (Please contact me for more details to see if you qualify for the free session.)
  • There are NO blackout dates.  The only restrictions on dates are if I am already booked or simply cannot fit your session into my schedule.  Typically, I book weddings and portrait sessions on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • This discount doesn’t apply to prints, albums, or canvases.
  • jdh_3192-1

I hope you are as excited as I am about this.  It’s nice to be able to show appreciation for something so important!  Have a great day!

With wedding season winding down for the year, I’m looking for a unique portrait session idea.  Hoping to get an engagement session scheduled?  Want to put on your dress for a Trash the Dress session?  Want to get a little Sassy Boudoir?  Looking for an updated family portrait? Need a photo for your website/promotional materials?

To enter the contest: Leave a comment below.  That’s it!  You must comment on an idea you have for a fun, unique portrait session. The sky is the limit… get creative! I’ll choose the winner based on the awesomeness of the idea.  :)

Two rules:
1) Must take place between November and April

2) Location should be in Wisconsin or Eastern Iowa

If you don’t want to enter the contest, but have a great idea for a session, feel free to add your comment and note that you aren’t entering the contest.

Operation: Kyle Smile!

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month. We all know that the pink ribbon signifies breast cancer… did you know gold signifies childhood cancer?

In honor of my super strong, fabulously talented, big-hearted nephew Kyle, I’m offering a fun promotion.  Kyle is currently kicking cancer’s butt, and he loves to hear about all the people that are rooting for him.  This little guy has already beat cancer once, and he’s ready to be done with chemo, hospital stays, and feeling sick.  So this is for you, Buddy!

*Photos taken by Steve and Kelly Cook, not by me.  :)

The idea: Send me a picture of  you or a member of your family wearing yellow (Kyle’s favorite color) or gold (color of childhood cancer).  Bonus points if you are with a group of 5 or more people.  You can wear a shirt, a ribbon, a blanket, or anything!  You also must take a piece of paper and write a message to Kyle or other cancer warriors in the picture.  Please email your picture to me at rebecca@studionoveau.com.

Wear gold to show your support and raise awareness! Here are some facts that you may or may not know – and we’re counting on you to spread the word:

  1. Cancer is the leading cause of death due to illness for U.S. children.
  2. The average age of a childhood cancer diagnosis is 6 years old – exactly when Kyle was first diagnosed.
  3. Every day, 35 kids hear the devastating news that they have cancer.

Thanks for your support!  This contest will run through September.

Last September, Ashley called me and asked if I’d consider shooting her and Jon’s destination wedding in Mexico at the Grand Palladium Resort. I gave it a lot of thought… no, wait. I IMMEDIATELY told her that I’d love to do it! So for the last 11 months, I’ve been looking forward to this wedding. Since my hubby is in Iraq and unable to take a vacation for obvious reasons, I called up my good friend Mandie from Red Gecko Studio in Madison, and asked if she’d accompany me. Luckily she was available and we had a fabulous “girl’s getaway” for the week. So a special thanks to Mandie for joining me on this wonderful wedding. And thanks to Chris at All-Ways Travel Agency in Janesville for planning a smooth trip. What fun!

And now I present to you… Ashley and Jon, in Mexico! (And let me say that I have WAY too many photos to choose for one blog post. Heck, I have way too many good ones for 5 posts! So I’ll try to condense it to two posts.)

One nice thing about having two photographers was that we were able to split up. Mandie joined the guys and I stayed with the girls. I loved Ashley’s dress and flowers:

And it was so fun that all the girls were getting ready together. Back in the states, I often don’t arrive till the bride is nearly done getting ready.

Ceremony… total awesomeness. There were these amazing, gorgeous clouds above us. It was so dramatic for a backdrop! Luckily, the rain held off until after the ceremony. :)

Ashley is super attached to their dog, Gizma. In fact, Gizma even had her own seat down in Mexico even though she was still in Wisconsin. It was complete with pictures, and everything. This is actually Ashley missing Gizma right after the ceremony… too cute!

I love this next one:

We had a few moments of light sprinkles while we frantically tried to take some quick family photos. And then… well, and then it started pouring. Buckets. Cats and dogs. (Or gatos and perros if you are in Mexico.) We’re not talking a nice, cooling rain. We’re talking about the kind of rain that is so pouring hard that we wondered how we were going to make it from the wedding gazebo to the shelter of the nearby beach bar. I’d like to give special thanks to the groomsmen and guests who helped shield my cameras (and me!) from the rain by holding trash bags over my head. You guys are troopers. You rock. :)

This is our “We don’t care that it’s raining because Ashley and Jon just got MARRIED!” photo.

They had a nice dinner on the resort as a precursor to their “real” reception held in Janesville a few weeks after their wedding. This was a nice dinner, complete with a delicious cake, touching speeches, and of course, wedding tequila. Is there such a thing as wedding tequila? Well, there is now. I think I made it up, but if it really exists, someone should please let me know!

See?
Wedding Tequila. Told ya. :) It looks prettier than it tastes. Not that I would know… it’s what they tell me!

The Wedding rings. They also look prettier than they taste. Once again, not that I would know.

I. LOVE. THIS. SHOT. It took about 50 attempts to capture, but this is their wedding dinner venue with (are you ready for this?) honest-to-goodness lightning in the background. Please keep in mind it was pitch black unless the lightning was striking, so I’m pretty proud of this one!

For the sake of the length of this already-too-long post, I’m going to continue it later with a second post of their formal and Trash the Dress pictures, a few behind-the-scenes, and a few from their reception in Janesville. So check back soon for some of my favorites of this wedding!

Make sure to leave a comment below!  Please let me know what you think of the pictures or leave a message for Ashley and Jon! As always, more images can be found on Facebook if you search for “Studio Noveau Photography”.

CAKE FOR COMMENTS!

Hello Friends, Family, and Clients!

Tomorrow, July 18th is my birthday.  (And it’s also client Bridget’s birthday!) This year, I thought I’d try something different.  Here is my birthday wish: please leave a comment below this post that says one of three things:

1) One fun memory you have of me OR

2) One of your favorite pictures that I have taken (posted on the blog or website) OR

3) Your favorite birthday memory.

Because I’ve been so blessed with great family, friends, and clients, I’d love to give back to those who haven’t been as fortunate for me.  For every two comments left for this post during the next week, I will donate a birthday item to the local food pantry in Viroqua.  Items I may donate include cake mix, frosting, candles, or something similar.  Please help me reach my goal of 25 donated items (50 comments).

Thanks for a great year!  (Photo of me below was taken by my good friend Jess on my birthday last year.  Thanks, Jess!)

This post is part 2 in a couple ways:

1) I already posted a preview of a preview

AND

2) I’m going to start their official preview with their reception.  Mostly because I love their venue and they were so much fun, but also because it was hard to narrow down favorites!

So I give you: Heather, Brandon, and families… at The Pedretti Party Barn in Viroqua.  Seriously, how wonderful is this place?  It has a vineyard, a cool old barn, beautiful scenery, and even an old stone church across the road.  Photography heaven.

And one last final shot… just because I love this one!

Even though I specialize in weddings, I do love shooting other types of portrait photography.  Last night I had the pleasure of taking photos of Kay’s family in Viroqua.  Kay and I used to work together so it was nice to see some familiar faces.  Anyway, Kay’s backyard was perfect for family portraits!  There was an awesome rock formation and they had set up a cool old farm implement and hay bales.  Sweet!

Their photos are already posted for proofing, but I thought it would be fun to showcase a couple here.  So… here they are!

Kay and Family- thanks for letting me join you last night!
